Cabbagetown Bands – Chomp Legacy Acts  – Chomp 2019

Our musical journey will always be a work in progress, please excuse the construction.

Creating a master list of Cabbagetown music was never gonna be an easy task. 100+ years of recordings, plus almost 20 years of Chomp, and there’s plenty still happening. Thank you for your patience as this page finds its shape. Take a moment to explore the wonderful sounds and amazing lives of these peerless artists who’ve once upon a time crossed paths with Cabbagetown:

About Chomp & Stomp Music

Our Mission

We hope you enjoy learning about music as much as we do! After a decade of meeting musicians from a dizzying array of traditions, we’ve grown weary of strict genre labels. Music is communication, and certain forms involve a group of artists exchanging ideas and being together in the moment, with a common tonal language but no specific rules. Old time music was meant to be accessible for participation, inviting to strangers, and full of wisdom – or mischief!

MUSIC ARCHIVES

Our archives are rich & luxurious. Please be patient while our all-volunteer team edits, enhances, and uploads all the wonderful audio-video content. For a more seamless experience, subscribe to our Chomp Music YouTube Channel.

(Subscribers will see new uploads periodically in their YouTube feed; there is no additional intrusion to your lifestyle. Of course, we recommend turning off YouTube push notifications in general.)

Fiddlin’ John Carson & Moonshine Kate
WikipediaCountry Music Hall of Fame – 152 Nassau St

Arguably the first commercial country music recording artist, Cabbagetown’s own Fiddlin’ John remains a polarizing influence. Riding the whirlwind of the near simultaneous Mary Phagan murder trial and Fulton Mill Strike (1914-15), Carson’s controversial songwriting once landed him in jail for slander of the governor. Seven time “Champion Fiddler of Georgia”, John’s 1923 recording of a minstrel tune with Lost Cause connotations, “The Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane”* (Okeh 4890-A), began the transformation of a nation’s musical landscape by casting a spotlight on the market potential for “hillbilly records”.

John Carson’s story is neither simple to dismiss in part, nor wholly pleasant to digest. Whether his personal convictions on the matter were particularly strong or a cynical matter of practical showmanship, he had affiliations with individuals representing certain distasteful organizations. Consider exploring elsewhere for more candid ellaborations. These titles may enlighten those seeking to understand the man with (1) an in-depth academic analysis Carson’s life, contributions, plus his strengths and shortcomings, and (2) a literary journalistic context offering a vividly dramatic portrait of Atlanta in 1913, particularly the trial that shook the nation and took its pulse:

  1. Fiddlin’ Georgia Crazy:
Fiddlin’ John Carson, His Real World, and the World of His Songs
  2. And the Dead Shall Rise:
The Murder of  Mary Phagan and the Lynching of Leo Frank

Sugar Lime Blue | www.sugarlimeblue.com

What is it to experience Sugar Lime Blue? Essentially vibrations of air manipulated by the voices & instruments of the musicians singing/playing that are interpreted through the ears of living beings and transformed in their brains to the sounds that soothe us, get us excited, spark emotions and even get us up to dance. Sugar Lime Blue is a real band where in the musicians are listening to one another and trying to create something new in the moment.
